You left to do the work properly. You built something real and somewhere along the way, a voice started telling you that the years before this one do not count, that you are brilliant at the craft, using your expertise wisely, but out of your depth at the business.
That voice is wrong and it is the most expensive thing you carry.
I have worked with hundreds of owners who made the same leap, from a career into their own business, often without quite meaning to, because they could see the bigger impact they wanted to make. Nearly all of them arrive with conviction. They are certain of where they want to get to, even when the route is foggy. What wobbles is confidence. The inner voice is expert at reminding them they are in new territory and that everything they did before is somehow irrelevant.
It is not. The instinct and judgement that got the business here is not an accident and it is not beside the point. It is the raw material for what comes next.
So before you reach for someone else’s system, do the opposite. Get out a pen and write down what you have already achieved and what you are known for. Then name the skills it took to do those things: curiosity, judgement, reading people, building relationships, making the call under pressure. Those are business skills and you already have them. The work is not to swap them for a method built for everyone and no one. It is to turn what you already do brilliantly into how you grow.
That is where the third thing comes in: congruence. Growing the business your way, in a way that fits how you actually think and work, is not a soft preference. It is what lets you move at pace. Every time I take on work that is not aligned with how I believe I should work, my own business slows down. I see the same in the owners I mentor. Force yourself into someone else’s method and you stall. Build on your own and you accelerate.
None of this means doing everything yourself. Where there is a genuine gap, bring in the expertise. That is not a weakness. It is judgement, the same judgement that built the business.
Conviction in where you are going. Confidence that what got you here counts. Congruence in doing it your way. Put plainly: there was never anything wrong with how you built this, the next stage grows from it.
